Assessment of mycotoxins in food and feed

One of the fundamental demands of consumer health protection is that substances with toxic effects such as mycotoxins be minimised in food and feed to the greatest extent possible. This is why legal regulations are in place for numerous mycotoxins setting maximum EU-wide levels for mycotoxins in food and feed.

The BfR draws up health assessments on mycotoxins in food and feed in line with its guidelines for health assessment and therefore assesses the risk to the health of humans and animals resulting from the presence of mycotoxins in food and feed. The opinions serve as a source of advice for political decision-makers and are taken into account in the risk assessments prepared by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
