Project description:
Campylobacter is an internationally underestimated food-borne pathogen and the major zoonotic agent in the European Union since 2005, causing 246,307 reported campylobacteriosis cases in 2016 (EFSA, 2017). The acute symptoms of the disease include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps but also severe sequelae, like arthritis, irritable bowel and the Guillain-Barré syndrome in some cases.
About one third of campylobacteriosis patients in Germany reported treatment by antibiotics, in particular by fluoroquinolones or macrolides (Rosner et al., 2017). Campylobacter isolates are frequently resistant to fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines while resistance against macrolides, gentamicin and streptomycin is still low in Germany (Vogt et al., 2016). Increased antibiotic resistances will compromise the effective treatment of human infections.
The project goal is to compare antibiotic resistances of German and Vietnamese Campylobacter strains in order to identify crucial forthcoming resistance determinants which are developed under high selection pressure and will challenge global food safety. The results will be used to develop alert tools - an extended phenotypic microdilution plate and a real-time PCR detection tool for risk-based routine analysis to be used on an international level to monitor incoming circulating resistance determinants, selected under high selection pressure.
