Participating in the BfR Smelling and Tasting Labyrinth

During the coming weekends, too, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) invites to a participation in the Smelling and Tasting Labyrinth with special themes at Diedersdorfer Weg 1 in Berlin-Marienfelde. The visitors of the didactical plant labyrinth will be offered a programme around the topics Smelling and Tasting, Biodiversity and Bioenergy.

Saturday, 27.8.2011, 10-18 hrs: Biodiversity in Marienfelde

The NatureRangers of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union Germany (NABU) from Marienfelde present NABU Berlin and the activities of the Nature Conservation Station Marienfelde with the Green Classroom and the Nature Conservation Park. Moreover, the JuniorRangers “Die Zwiebelfrösche” present biodiversity in Marienfelde and a honey farm.

Saturday, 3.9. and Sunday, 4.9.2011, from 10-18 hrs:

Bioenergy generation from energy plants and other renewable resources

BioenergieBeratungBornim GmbH (B³), one of twelve consulting teams of the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), presents the model of a biogas plant and different energy sources such as maize, wood, coal etc.. Visitors are introduced to energy carriers which contain bioenergy. Mascot Farmer Huber takes them in an entertaining manner through the programme and the children can make models out of play maize.

Tasting and Smelling – How do our senses work?

On the stage of the BfR Smelling and Tasting Labyrinth, Professor Dr. Bernhard Tauscher of the Association for Taste Research offers several tests with which visitors can check their perception and test their sense of smelling and tasting. This will include questions like: Do you taste cinnamon? What is spicy? What kind of spice is this and what can I use it for?  

Sunday, 18 September, from 10-18 hrs:

BfR Children University: Does it really contain what it tastes like?

Does the strawberry aroma in jam really come from strawberries or a chemistry set? With a molecular biological method developed by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, which is now applied throughout the world, visitors can get down to the bottom of scents. In a simulated laboratory situation members of staff of BfR show in a small experiment what this analysis looks like and what needs to be taken into account. Together with the children, DNA is isolated from a banana and ingredients are identified.

The BfR Smelling and Tasting Labyrinth is the third didactic plant labyrinth of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment since 2009. On a five hectare large field, plants and ways represent, seen from the air, ‘Schnuffi’, a piglet nosing a rose. An around 2.5 kilometre long way and various wrong ways lead through a jungle of maize, millet, amaranth and many aromatic plants. On the educational trail which leads through the labyrinth, visitors learn a lot about scents and aromas. How are they perceived? What role do they play for humans and the world of flora and fauna? How are scents and aromas assessed in terms of health?

Scent organs, smelling and tasting patches and a "stinkodrome" with agricultural odours invite visitors to nose very different scents and identify them. In the more than 1,000 m2 large entrance area kids can play and rollick about in a straw castle. During the weekends all creature comforts are offered here.
