National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is one of 25 Institutes and Centres of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The mission of NIEHS is to reduce the human illness and impact dysfunction from environmental causes by understanding each of these elements and how they interact. The NIEHS achieves its mission through multidisciplinary biomedical research programs, prevention and intervention efforts, and communication strategies that encompass training, education, technology transfer. NIEHS provides on the web site fact sheets with information about the use of alternative methods in toxicological research and testing.
