Use of UV/UV-LED radiation for reduction of microorganisms on eggs (UVegg)
This third-party funded project is conducted in the framework of the BfR research programme on exposure estimation and the assessment of biological risks.
BLE grant number: 281A106716
Project homepage: -
To assess the health impact and the efficacy of the reduction of zonotic micro organisms by a UVC-LED radiation as well as to assess the harmlessness of a UVC-LED radiation of eggs a risk assessment will be conducted following international scientific standards. On the basis of the risk assessment, options for action to minimize risks could be expressed. Further on and as a part of quality assurance of repetitive activities in food processing this procedure needs documented instructions. Because no published methods or standard specifications are available an individual Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) on the application of UVC-LED radiation on eggs is required. Consequentially and as a part of the project a SOP will be drawn to instruct also such persons which were before not involved in this procedure but have a professional competence.
BfR parts of the project
In phrame of four working packages the BfR focuses on following topics:
- Determination of the inactivation efficiency of UVC LEDs against Salmonella enterica
- Determination of sensory product quality
- Praparation of a universal SOP for decontamination by UVC treatment of table eggs
